Porto, the coastal city in the northwest of the country, is the second largest city in Portugal. Colorful old houses, charming cafés from the Belle Époque, magnificent churches and plenty of fantastic restaurants, hip port wine bars and colourful street art are increasingly attracting guests from all over the world. Porto has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996 and the historic old town is definitely worth a visit. Porto is still an insider tip for guests who want to combine golf, culture and nature. The famous Douro Valley is the oldest wine-growing region in the world and a trip along the mighty river from Porto is well worthwhile.
Golf in great nature
In the region around Porto there are five 18 hole golf courses as well as several 9 hole courses. Some of the best courses, although further afield, are very worthwhile to visit, as they offer both spectacular golf and breathtaking scenery. Since the golf courses here are rarely crowded, there is nothing to stop you from enjoying a relaxing round in northern Portugal. The best time for a golf trip to the north of Portugal is from April to early November. Perfect vacation weather is almost guaranteed with little rain and pleasant temperatures.
Wine, port wine, pleasure
The famous port wine, which originated here and still matures in huge cellars along the Douro River, is known worldwide. Several port wine cellars offer tastings; in Solar do Vinho do Porto, for example, you can choose from over 200 varieties of port. Crazy scene pubs, chique bars and countless restaurants invite you to linger and enjoy the experience. The cuisine in northern Portugal is authentic, fresh and full of flavors of the Costa Verde and the fertile land.
